1. a) a bar which rests on a fixed support called a fulcrum and is used to transmit force and motion especially by moving a weight at one end in response to the force of pushing down at the other end, much like the action of a seesaw. The lever is a simple machine. b) a bar working on the same principle as the lever, used to control machinery, such as the gearshift lever in an automobile.
2. any bar working on an axis for support, such as a crowbar or handspike, used to pry: »

3. Figurative. a means of exerting control or achieving a purpose: »
